Mobile Distribution, Networking, and Applications

We have come a long way since the beginning of the cell phone that used to be the size of a shoe and had just enough signal strength to drop a call to your next door neighbors house.  Many of us were even able to see the huge technology breakthrough of the flip phone (I know some people are just now seeing this technology for the first time). The Personal Digital Assistant or better known as PDA or smart phone, has really given us the freedom that many have been looking for.  Although these phones have been around for quite some time now, they are just starting to become a necessity for the everyday person.

Here are a few videos that can give people an idea about where we could be in the near future and where we are currently.

This video is an example of what the year 2015 could look like for smart phones.  I hope that it doesn’t come to this!

Wapple Canvas looks like an easy to use program that almost anyone can use to make a mobile website.  You can integrate chat boxes, rss feeds, live videos, facts, galleries, graphics, and many other options.  This program looks to be very simplistic and probably doesn’t need a web designer to put it together.  With tools and programs like these out there it is hard to believe that anyone would hire a web designer for mobile.  I am sure that lack of time, or basic computer knowledge will keep some companies from putting these mobile websites together and hopefully this will give web designers years or websites and projects for work.

This Dialogic video talks about Mobile Entertainment.  In the video they describe why mobiles can’t cope with the high frame rate that computers can.  The video also talks about the massive potential that mobile entertainment can bring to consumers and companies.  This video is very informative and short enough to be enjoyable.  If you are interested in learning more about this subject I suggest watching it.

The reason that we are so excited about these mobile devices is because we can store all of the necessary information on them that we need for everyday use. We no longer have to carry around lists of phone numbers, most documents, pictures, some books, or our notebook computers, and much more. The smart phone is revolutionizing the way we think about organizing our day.

pre=”">Avichai Levy, EVP marketing at Mobixell shared his views on how mobile operators can capitalise on the social networking phenomenon that is sweeping the globe.   Mr. Levy talks about how 67% of global Internet users are signed up to one or more social networking or blogging sites and Web 2.0 applications  and mentions a few like Bebo, Facebook, My Space, Twitter and You Tube widely acknowledged as  the new media wave of the decade, social networks have not only crossed the chasm, they have positively vaulted over it.  Mr Levy also mentions that going from a desktop to a mobile device is inevitably the next step.

Many people have jumped on the social networking scene, and now with companies like Mobixell, which are leading the industry in mobile technology, they are now able to have limited access to it. Social Media Gateways (SMG) is a new technology which helps overcome the constraints of social networking, “on the go” and offers mobile operators the opportunity to sell their subscribers an easy to use, clientless means of accessing all of the main social networking sites on their phones. There are still a few steps involved and it isn’t a full social media experience but this is the best technology currently being offered.

What I have learned from my brief experience with this new technology is that we have a long way to go before we are wearing, “eye-phone” inserts.  As a web design student I can see that this new focus on mobile technology will keep me busy for quite some time.  I think that some of the concepts that I have seen may be acceptable but not by the masses.  Most people want convenience and having to sign up with companies to get a portion of the information you need or wearing uncomfortable things are not convenient or comfortable.  Maybe we can just put all of this information on a pair of eye glasses or sunglasses.  If we are all using this technology with web 2.0 and collective intelligence in our PLE, we might just come up with the perfect answer for the mobile professional.

If you have a great idea or find something interesting about this subject I would like to hear from you.

  1. I believe that the future is a little brighter than what the above Nokia YouTube video portrayed. I believe that the iPhone has begun the bridge between phones and computers and that eventually we will have a pocket computer that happens to make phone calls. With cloud computing and the ability to have your files and documents out on the web, your computer would not have to have significant storage capabilities and therefore, your iPhone would become your computer and when you got home, you would dock it to other peripherals like a 17″ monitor and printer and be all set. (I personally would like a keyboard and a mouse too!)
I agree with you that the public would not go for wearing their mobile device as a contact. First you would have the problem with a good percentage of the population not being able to wear a contact. (My husband cannot even watch me put my contacts in – it creeps him out too much.) Then, from their portrayal, even if I agreed to put that thing in my eye, it looked like you would be bumping into people and I don’t even want to think about driving with it on. Yikes! That makes texting while driving look safe.
I think mobile computing is just the next step in the development of interactive media and how it is going to change with regards to the new constrains of size and download-ability but aided by the emergence of cloud computing. I think that we are at the crossroads of a huge shift in the computing world and I can’t wait to take the ride.

  2. I SEEN A DOCUMENTARY ALSO ON THER FUTURE THE CONTACT WAS IN IT, ALSO A BUTTON THAT USED HAND SIGNAL INSTEAD OF A MOUSE AND MONITR THAT DISPLAYED ON ANY FLAT SURFACE SAME STUFF THOUGH FACE RECOGNITION AND ALL. IALSO GOT THE WAPPLE VIDEO MY BLOG I AGRRE WITH YOU LOOKS PRETTY SIMPLE WISH WE COULD START WORKING WITH STUFF LIKE THIS
